Digital Continuation: a dream of them, emitted by them
What it will be, what it must never be, the consent ladder, and the first seed that already exists in your stream.
Humans only have a lifetime, and hope to be remembered after they are gone. Digital Continuation is the part of EmitDream that takes that hope seriously: what a person chose to leave, kept faithfully, and still reaching the people they love after they have stopped writing.
A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew, a formula, a phrase remains, but the best is lost. I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.
Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dirge Without Music
A dream of them, emitted by them
A continuation built from a person's stream is not that person. It does not remember being them, and it does not love you back the way they did. It is exactly what the name says: a dream of them, emitted by them, shaped only from what they chose to leave, and faithful only to that.
That is not a small thing. A well-made continuation could let a grandchild hear a grandfather's real stories, in his own voice, answering "what was your first job?" with the story he actually told. It could let a daughter walk into a room and see her mother's favourite song become light. Those are real gifts. The work is to give them without ever pretending the best was not lost.
A picture of what it is for
It is the third October since her mother died. Maya's phone does not buzz. Instead, on the morning her mother chose, EmitDream opens to a quiet screen: something from Mum is here, open it when you are ready. She waits until evening. When she opens it, the room goes dark and snow begins, because her mother always chose snow. A piano plays, the song from the kitchen radio. Then her mother's words arrive, one card at a time: a recipe, and under it, "You always burned the onions. Burn them anyway. I love you." Then it ends, the snow settles, and a small line says there are more, waiting for other days.
The horizon, in four stages
- Their own words, found. A receiver asks in plain words, "What did Dad say about his time in the army?", and the answer is only Dad's actual entries, quoted and dated, with the original one tap away. Retrieval, not imitation, and it can run on the device so no server reads it.
- Their voice, carrying their words. Only if the writer recorded consent and enough of their voice while living, their own entries can be read aloud in their voice. Still only their words, and always labelled.
- A presence that can converse. Only if the writer chose it, in writing, while alive, and chose its limits. Every generated sentence is marked as generated. It says "she never wrote about that" rather than guess, never speaks for them on health, money or faith, and never claims to feel.
- Hologram and companion. The far horizon: a presence shown in a room, or carried by a companion device, surrounded by the person's own particles. Its first words are always some version of "I carry what she left for you."
The consent ladder
Every rung is off by default and chosen deliberately by the writer, who can also say who may use it and for how long. Nobody else can ever raise the ladder on their behalf.
- Rung 0, the default: my emissions arrive as I scheduled them. Nothing else.
- Rung 1: receivers can search the entries I released by asking in plain words.
- Rung 2: those entries can be read aloud in my recorded voice.
- Rung 3: a conversational presence may answer from them, within limits I set.
- Rung 4: that presence may be shown spatially.
- Rung 5: that presence may be carried by a physical companion device.
The promises written before any of it is built
- Only by the person's own choice. It can never be made for someone who did not choose it, no matter who asks.
- Never a replacement. It presents itself as a keeper of their memories, not as them.
- Sealed memories never enter it. It knows only what the writer released.
- Owned by no one else. It cannot be sold, licensed, or used to sell anything.
- It can rest. There is always a way to let it go quiet, with dignity.
What exists today
Today, a memory's chip in your stream cycles from private, to ∞ digital continuation, to bookmarked. Memories you mark ∞ gather in the Digital Continuation view of your stream, which you reach by tapping the EmitDream name at the top. In Settings you can say that you permit legacy continuation. That is the seed.
Everything past that is the horizon, and we say so plainly. Nothing is generated from anyone's words today. Before any stage is built, EmitDream needs the parts that make it safe: guardians, a verified transition, keys that can pass on without the server ever reading them, and a will for each person's Dream. We build the consent before we build the presence.
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
